NALAZIMIKA kwanza kumshukuru Mwenyezi Mungu kwa kuniwezesha kushiriki mafunzo ya siku tano ya Internet na Uhusiano wake na uandishi wa habari wakati huu wa dunia ya maendeleo makubwa ya sayansi na teknolojia ambapo internet ni kila kitu.

Elimu ya Internet ni muhimu sana kwa maisha ya waandishi wa habari kwani kama alivyosema Rupert Murdoch alipokuwa akihutubia wahariri wenzake wa magazeti nchini Marekani; “Utafika wakati hakuna atakayekuwa na haja ya kununua gazeti kwa sababu maendeleo ya sayansi na teknolojia yanamuwezesha kupata habari na taarifa yoyote aitakayo.”

Hii ina maana kuwa mwandishi wa habari asiyefahamu elimu ya Internet ni kama vile anajitia katika mazingira magumu ya kufanya kazi zake. Hii ni elimu muhimu sana kwani kwa Internet, mtu anapata taarifa ya tukio wakati linatokea na hivyo kuepuka kupata taarifa zilizopotoshwa.

Nimenufaika sana na mafunzo haya, ingawa siwezi kusema nimepata kila nilichokitarajia. Siku tano za mazunzo hazikutosha kunijenga vizuri isipokuwa nilichopata ni mwanzo wa safari ndefu ya kujifunza ili nipate kubobea katika matumizi ya Internet kufanikisha kazi zangu. Mkazo zaidi nitauweka katika kufahamu kwa vizuri zaidi namna ya kuandika makala zangu kwa kuunganisha viunganisho (links) vya kihabari kwa ajili ya kuwaongoza wasomaji wangu na wale watakaotembelea blogu yangu mpya niliyoanzisha wakati wa mafunzo haya, kwenye upataji wa taarifa zaidi kwa kile nilichokiandika.

Kwa yote haya, nafurahia kazi nzuri ya mwalimu wetu mkuu katika mafunzo, Peik Johansson wa Shirika la Utangazaji la Finland akifanyia Radio Finland kwa kutujenga taaluma ya Internet na Maggid Mjengwa, Mtanzania anayeishi Iringa na kijana mweledi wa Internet na mwana blogu maarufu nchini Tanzania. Wamenijenga nguvu kubwa.


ON the outset, I must thank God for enabling me to attend the five days Internet workshop being among about 15 editors from various media houses in Tanzania. The workshop, or rather, the training, was very good. It provided me with good opportunity to learn something which I have never thought of placing myself to learn.

Internet knowledge is a very essential component for any modern time journalist to know. As one Rupert Murdoch, American editor, once said to his colleagues, “it will reach a time when nobody would have interest in reading newspaper because of the technological advancement of internet”, for a journalist to lack knowledge of the internet, is like bringing self into uncalled for situation.

Via internet, one gets desired news and information and would not mind to by a newspaper or tuning to radio or television to get the same. Internet enables one to see incidents at the time of occurrence, something very fantastic, in that, no distortion.

The benefit I got from the training is a good start and this pushes me to build keen interest in learning more how to use internet to do journalism effectively and efficiently. I am saying there is need to learn more because 5 days could not give me everything I expected, and by that I should say that I need more time to learn more on the way I link my material with various websites.

This would help to lead my readers and those who would-be visitors of my new blog which I introduced during course of the training, to get more information of what I wrote.

I thank so much our training instructors, Mr. Peik Johansson from Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE Radio Finland who taught us Internet & its relations in journalism, and also Mr. Maggid Mjengwa, a Tanzanian residing in Iringa and a renowned blogger in the country. NDANI ya darasa, wakati mwalimu akifundisha, baadhi ya washiriki walipata nafasi ya kupiga picha maendeleo ya mafunzo. Picha kama hizi zilitumika kusaidia washiriki wa mafunzo kujifunza namna ya kuzituma kwenye blogu zao. Hii ilikuwa ni sehemu muhimu ya mafunzo kwa wahariri waliohudhuria mafunzo ya siku tano ya utendaji kazi ya habari za uchunguzi kwa kutumia Internet.

Haya ni matokeo ya ukuaji wa teknolojia ya mtandao wa kompyuta katika kurahisisha shughuli za utaafutaji, uandaaji na usambazaji wa habari mbalimbali kwa manufaa ya wasomaji wa magazeti na wasikilizaji wa redio na televisheni.

Lazima tukubali kwamba mafunzo aliyotupa mwalimu wetu, Keip Johansson, yalikuwa na manufaa makubwa kwa ajili ya kutujenga kitaaluma. Tushuruku basi waandaaji na wafadhili wa mafunzo haya adhimu. Yalikuwa mafunzo ya maana sana na ambayo yalikuja kwa wakati wake hasa, kwani fani ya uandishi wa habari imejikuta katika mabadiliko makubwa kutokana na mapinduzi ya teknolojia.

Maoni kama haya nilipata kuyasikia hivi karibuni kutoka kwa waandishi waliohudhuria mafunzo ya kwanza kama haya mwezi Agosti mwaka huu kwenye ukumbi tuliokuwepo safari hii, wa Tanzania Global Development Learning Centre (TGDLC) ndani ya majengo ya Chuo cha Usimamizi wa Fedha Tanzania (IFM).

ReCap of Day 3

In yesterday’s class, I learnt how to search information from various websites. These are local and international websites. And it was national websites used by government and international institutions, including national and international news agencies.

Here, I have in mind Inter Press Services (IPS), Al Jazeera, CNN, Reuters. I learnt as a continued process to myself how to read news published in the websites introduced and managed by local media institutions, especially the mainstream media like Guardian Ltd, Mwananchi Communication, Business Times Ltd.

I got to know in details the nature of other websites meant for regional purposes. Such websites are AllAfrica.com, Africa Journals Online (AJOL), but also those managed by individual media institutions. I also learnt that of abundant information which can be obtained from different websites like Wikipedia and CIA World Fact Book.

Mafunzo kwa Internet

Kusema kweli tangu Jumatatu nimeingia katika dunia mpya. haya mafunzo ninayopata kupitia Peik JOHANSSON, ni mazuri ajabu. waandishi wa TZ tumekuwa nyuma sana katika mambo haya ya kujikita vilivyo kwa Internet. sasa tunajua makosa tulofanya, lazma tuamke kwenda mbele. Internet ni kila kitu kama alivyosema Rupert MURDOCH katika hotuba yake kwa Jukwaa la Wahariri la Marekani Agosti 2005.
Tukaze kamba katika kuchimba mambo kupitia Internet. najua tukimaliza Ijumaa, tutakuwa wahariri/waandishi wa namna nyingine tofauti na tulivyoingia TGDLCentre hapa IFM. Tunalazima ya kuwapa dole waandaaji na wafadhili wa mafunzo haya adhimu kwelikweli.

Rupert Murdoch touches the minds of his colleagues in the American Society of Newspaper Editors by saying newspapers faced a big challenge in the wake of technological advancement of internet from which people opt to get news.

Contrary to what it used to be in the past years where people depended so much on newspapers to get news and information, nowadays they just pop in into the internet cafes scattered everywhere in their vicinity and after a tick of a second get what they want.

That then, Murdoch says, has enormous impact to the newspaper industries as readership culture dwindles every minute which on the other hand meant the profit does also deteriorate.

And because editors were managing news as if it was product of their own making, so much that, it was them who decided what to publish and when to do it, that trend has to be forgotten and new aspect set into their minds.

For those who still believed in the past memories, Murdoch suggests them to read the Carnegie Corporation about young generation’s changing behaviours of news consumption and what they mean for the future of the news industries.

The report shows that a dramatic revolution which has emerged in the news business is taking shape so fast and it is not about television anchor changes, scandals at storied newspaper or embedded reporters. The future course of news, according to the report author, Merrill brown, was being altered by technology-mania young people no longer wedded to traditional news outlets or even accessing news in traditional ways.

Murdoch meant to remind his colleagues in the print media that they need to realise that the next generation of people accessing news and information, whether from newspapers or any other source, have a different set of expectations about the kind of news they will get, including when and how they will get it, where will get it from, and who they will get it from.

He sums up his speech by insisting newspaper editors to change and be digital natives instead of being in old belief that newspapers can continue to attract big readership while there are other medium of communication through internet which allow readers to use search engines to get whatever news they desire and at time of their wanting.

JABIR IDRISSA YUNUS, a 44 years old journalist working with Hali Halisi Publishers Limited (HHP) as Editor of a weekly tabloid, MwanaHALISI. The company also publishes MSETO, a by-weekly paper which covers sports&culture. I joined the HHP in April 2007 as a correspondent from Zanzibar. In three months, became Asst Editor of MwanaHALISI and was elevated in October 2007 to the post of Editor. I have been in the field since mid 1980’s when I was a ardent penpal fan in the Sunday News. Later on, was sending sports stories to Uhuru, a daily Kiswahili paper published by the then Shirika la Magazeti ya Chama (SMC) which is nowadays Uhuru Publications Ltd (UPL) - this was in tandem with me being a radio announcer of a programme called KILIMO BORA which I was preparing under the Isles' Department of Agriculture. The programme was aired through Sauti ya Tanzania Zanzibar. The UPL employed me in November 1991 after my two year diploma course in journalism at the Tanzania School of Journalism (TSJ) which after expansion is now called Institute of Journalism and Mass Communication (IJMC) of the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). I started as sports reporter at the headquarters in Dar es Salaam. In March 1992, I was transferred to Zanzibar as company’s Bureau Chief, the post I served until my transfer to Hqtrs in January 1996, immediately after the first General Elections in Tanzania. I quit the job to join Business Times Ltd (BTL), publishers of a string of newspapers incl. daily Majira, afternoon tabloid DarLeo and a weekly English Business Times, a mainly business and economy paper. I worked as senior reporter at Majira, SpotiStarehe and later on as Asst News Editor of Majira and SpotiStarehe, before being transferred to DarLeo as Sports Editor and later as News Editor of the paper. In August 2002, Habari Corporation Ltd (HCL) which was recently renamed as New Habari Group after the proprietors, mainly veteran Tanzanian journalists, sold it to popular businessman and politician Rostam Aziz, employed me as senior reporter and later Asst. Features Editor. HCL retrenched me in July 2006 but I immediately joined a weekly Tathmini newspaper which has ceased production after few months of its establishment. I am creating this blog while the MwanaHALISI is banned for three months starting on 13th October. All in all, I really enjoy this fani!
