Murdoch

Rupert Murdoch touches the minds of his colleagues in the American Society of Newspaper Editors by saying newspapers faced a big challenge in the wake of technological advancement of internet from which people opt to get news.

Contrary to what it used to be in the past years where people depended so much on newspapers to get news and information, nowadays they just pop in into the internet cafes scattered everywhere in their vicinity and after a tick of a second get what they want.

That then, Murdoch says, has enormous impact to the newspaper industries as readership culture dwindles every minute which on the other hand meant the profit does also deteriorate.

And because editors were managing news as if it was product of their own making, so much that, it was them who decided what to publish and when to do it, that trend has to be forgotten and new aspect set into their minds.

For those who still believed in the past memories, Murdoch suggests them to read the Carnegie Corporation about young generation’s changing behaviours of news consumption and what they mean for the future of the news industries.

The report shows that a dramatic revolution which has emerged in the news business is taking shape so fast and it is not about television anchor changes, scandals at storied newspaper or embedded reporters. The future course of news, according to the report author, Merrill brown, was being altered by technology-mania young people no longer wedded to traditional news outlets or even accessing news in traditional ways.

Murdoch meant to remind his colleagues in the print media that they need to realise that the next generation of people accessing news and information, whether from newspapers or any other source, have a different set of expectations about the kind of news they will get, including when and how they will get it, where will get it from, and who they will get it from.

He sums up his speech by insisting newspaper editors to change and be digital natives instead of being in old belief that newspapers can continue to attract big readership while there are other medium of communication through internet which allow readers to use search engines to get whatever news they desire and at time of their wanting.
